Chelsea Derks, LCSW
I am a licensed clinical social worker and received my BSW from Central Michigan University and my MSW from the University of Michigan, where I specialized in mental health and interpersonal practice. My experience has primarily been school-based, working with immigrant and refugee students and their families in Detroit and now Chicago. During my school based experience I also serviced students with disabilities and their families.
My approach to therapy is collaborative, empowering, nonjudgmental, trauma informed and goal focused. I see therapy as an avenue for people to remove roadblocks from life so they can move on from surviving to thriving. I integrate treatment modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, Affirmative Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and mindfulness techniques. I specialize in treating PTSD among children and/or immigrant populations. I am also skilled with additional issues such as depression, anxiety, emotional abuse, grief, school issues, mood disorders, personality disorders, and life transitions.
My passions include trying new things (especially food), traveling, activism, and spending as much time as possible with my favorite people. I also love watching documentaries and walking my friends' dogs. I use the pronouns she/her and am fluent in Spanish.
